Zelda Sailor Majora's Moon Mask

Posted by ArtistGamerGal - May 15th, 2015

Hiya Newgrounders!

I've uploaded my latest animation: Zelda Salior Majora's Moon Mask to Newgrounds today! Please check it out here: http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/657760

I used a lot of fancy new tools on this animation and am really happy with the result! I actually didn't use Flash at all for one of the first times in my animation career and started using Toon Boom Harmony which I am now totally in love with. Flash will always have a special place in my heart (and I still use it for work) but I can't deny all the amazing tools Toon Boom has to offer in improving my animations.

I have also gotten really into compositing in After Effects over the past couple years and I think that has also helped my animations improve a lot in quality.

I'm really excited to keep posting here and hope to have more animations coming your way soon! The next animation I am planning will give a glimpse of the original series idea I've been toying with for awhile now called Chroma Black. I've been putting some concepts of drawings of characters in the art portal lately - if you're curious check it out or if you are super curious you can see tons more drawings from it on my website: www.artistgamergal.com

Cool stuff!

Thank you!

You are a Genius!!
I love your flashes!!
And your skills ♡

Thank you! Although I am far from a genius lol :p

That's some good stuff!

Thanks!

I saw this circulating around my facebook awhile ago. Cool to see you posting it up on NG.

Great line work btw.

Thanks! I owe the great line art to switching over to Toon Boom. It has excellent line quality tools.

You watch way too much sailor moon.

That parody was far too accurate.

Ha! Thanks!

I actually hadn't watched Sailor Moon since back in the old Toonami days so a few months ago I got the recently remastered DVDs and the 3DS remake of Majora's mask and thus this animation was born!

I also downloaded the transformation part of the animation to my computer and watched it carefully frame by frame as I animated to compare it to my own to keep it accurate.

I'm from Canada and never actually the toonami lineup.

I seen pieces of the toonami lineup on YTV.

Most of my exposure to anime on television came from Bravo, Space,YTV, ect.

Certain TV stations used to play anime movies and others used to have reruns of Astroboy.

Sailor moon was pretty much a big hit in Canada.

I've always wanted to see toonami but missed out.

Aww.. I'm sorry! I often forget the fact that so much of TV is local to specific countries. Although it so much easier to see whatever you want nowadays. Thanks internet!

Hope you don't mind me double posting. Yeah I could tell it wasn't flash. I have been watching some seriously great Toonboom harmony tutorials, though I haven't tried it yet myself.

My current Cartoon Expectations that's on FP I used Flash and After Effects, but I really want to give up on flash and move on to something better. I'm just having cold feet. If ya ever want to chat with me, I'm looking for animator friends and I don't bite. :D

No problem at all! I totally understand the cold feet- it took me awhile to finally come around to it.

I had an older version of Toon Boom installed for a few years but just never really did anything with it. But I just got to a point where I couldn't help but start to feel limited by Flash. It just didn't seem like it was possible to achieve the look I wanted with it. I started to feel like all my animations just had that genric "Flash look" and style if you know what I mean lol

Once I actually got into it and started to see the potential with Toon Boom combined with After Effects for compositing and Photoshop for backgrounds I was hooked. Although I still use Flash for my professional work. But in some ways making the jump taught me how meaningless software is by making me realize my animation and drawing skills are what really mattered more than the tools I'm using. Animation truely is an art all it's own! But I'm sure you know that lol

I don't know if you've already seen them but Adam Phillips has a great lil intro series to Toon Boom on his YouTube channel that is specifically from the perspective of someone learning who is coming from a traditional frame by frame animator/ Flash background and that REALLY helped me learn the basics that I specifically wanted fast. I personally had trouble finding any Toon Boom animation tutorials that weren't just about how to build a pre-made tween based character animation.

And I'm always open to making new friends! Feel free to add me on Skype (ArtistGamerGal). I'm not on super often, but I'd be happy to chat about art or animation or w/e every now and then ^_^

I already told you that MM toon was great, but I'm even more impressed that one of your first Toon Boom animations came out so well! I tried Toon Boom in the past and it didn't last very long because the interface was so foreign to me :(

Thanks! Toon Boom does take a bit of getting used to, for sure. But the nice thing is that most modern versions of Toon Boom are built with a "I'm coming from Flash and don't know what I'm doing" mode, which really helped me. It's mostly just keyboard shortcuts though.

If you're looking to get into trying it again, I'd highly recommend the tutorials on Adam Phillips YouTube channel since they are not only taught from the perspective of someone transitioning from Flash, but also from the perspective of someone who works with frame by frame animation. The biggest reason I made the jump was because I was so sick of the inconsistent and difficult to control line quality with the brush tool in Flash. I ADORE the brush in Toon Boom and even just like sketching with it now!
